Dear Family of St. Patricks,

This weekend we heard in the second reading St. Paul telling us:

Do not conform yourselves to this age
but be transformed by the renewal of your mind,
that you may discern what is the will of God,
what is good and pleasing and perfect.

St. Paul’s age was filled with the things of the material world just as much as our own. Money, Power, Honor, Sex, and Oppression were as common then as they are now. Paul knew though that if people were going to Act differently they had to think differently. The Gospel was Good News precisely because it taught people how to think about the world that they were caught up in. It gave the Wisdom of the Holy Spirit to the believer’s mind and heart which showed to them the correct path to walk in and gave them the power to do so. This Wisdom or Truth/Light is the very person of Christ who illuminates us not so much from without as from within as we walk with him and live in relationship with him. He truly comes to make us Children of the Light and the Day. As we are illuminated by His Spirit we are renewed in our minds and since the mind is the gateway to the heart, this illumination heals our hearts as we discover truly how much we are loved by God. We become changed as we learn that he who holds the keys of life and death over our lives is trustworthy and good. This coming week let us take a look at the things that our minds and the world tell us are important and then compare them with the life of Jesus and the Gospel. Are we allowing him to renew our minds and our priorities? Are we truly seeking Jesus and what is important to God and his will? Or are we just living our lives running after the World and the Flesh still? Whatever the answers may be let us invite him to renew our minds once more or even further, so that our hearts may become even more filled with his love as we grow with Christ. May we never forget that the mind IS the gateway to the heart and that both were made for Christ.

Blessings,
Fr. Easton
